My Editorial Standards

Florida Masochist makes another good point about the Scott Thomas incident at TNR:

This isn't about conservative or liberal but the truthfulness of something published in The New Republic.

Foer doesn't owe conservative bloggers anything, he does owe his subscribers a explanation. Myself included, and I've got serious doubts. At this point Foer isn't doing that job.

This point should not have to be made! And, I'm concerned about in Howard Kurtz's WaPo column, too.

Foer said he and another editor have met "Thomas," whose identity the magazine is protecting to shield him against retaliation from his superiors. He said the soldier's three columns were fact-checked, to the extent possible, before publication, and that he is now trying to resolve the critics' objections "to my complete satisfaction."

Foer sounds like Vice-President Cheney claiming executive privilege, "...to my satisfaction."

I'm sorry, Frankie, I pay you to satisfy me. How few subscribers do you honestly want for the magazine? On a scale of people I implicitly trust, or have a reason to trust...well, you're not on the list! I might have problems with conservative bloggers, but you're no higher on the food chain! But, fellow veterans ARE on the list of those I have a reason to trust. There needs to be a higher editorial standard, and it needs to be definitively clear. Foer scores no points for his ridiculously partisan barbarian...croak.

Strike two!
