The Malaysian People's Hero
Malaysia's health minister, Dr. Chua Soi Lek resigned after admitting to participation, but not knowingly, in two sex videos with a "friend". At first, Dr. Chua was adamant, but then resigned his government post.
"After I made my confession, I had hoped Malaysians would be able to accept my apology," the 61-year-old Chua told reporters. "Unfortunately, from the feedback I received, I observed that Malaysians cannot accept it."
"Some Malaysians have a holier than thou attitude," said Chua, a doctor by training.
Chua, who said the woman was a "personal friend", insisted on Tuesday he would not resign over the issue, drawing a sharp rebuke from people within and outside government.
However Dr. Chua's party continues to support the experienced doctor. Speaking for him, the party chairman said "...the DVD issue would not destroy the people's support for Dr Chua." Dr. Chua has claimed the existence of a conspiracy against him. At the very least, the man seemed unliked. BBC also reports "As health minister, Mr Chua has advocated giving out free condoms to reduce the spread of HIV, in the face of religious opposition." The blogger The Malaysian also laments:
He's been a good Minister of Health. Unfortunately in this hypocritical world of ours it is OK to bilk billions from public funds but if you're caught with your fly unzipped or trousers rolled down, out you go.
