According to certain republican circles and many Democrats (like the Clintons) that statement is almost like advocating rebellion, or opposing economic science itself.

I hope that Taiwan will continue to remain independent from China but can understand why some voters in that nation might view appeasing the Chinese government as the only option.

Taiwan has long suffered from a lack of courage within the international community. The U.S. and other democracies certainly could do more to help Taiwan.

I have long been an advocate of restoring diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Taiwan as well as admission to the U.N.
