Hard to believe that it makes sense, economically, to ship low-level radioactive waste five thousand miles.

On another note: The disposal problem is a serious one, I agree, but I think one mistake that is being made (especially regarding the high-level waste) is that we're trying to think of solutions that last for the next ten thousand years. Seems to me it would make sense to think in terms of a few hundred years, and count on the smarts of future generations to come up with ideas about how to deal with it, or even to find a use for it.

Yes, it would mean «dumping problems on our grandchildren,» as every NIMBY politician will be sure to repeat early and often. But continuing to burn fossil fuels is also dumping problems on our grandchildren.
