Updated: Two Strikes (and It's a Double!)
Update: Finally, the WP 2.5 upgrade installation-and-directory and-database switch is completed! In the process, my ISP shut off uploading (shades of PRC?), dragging the ordeal into hours-long tedium full of frantic support-mongering and manual and single file uploading. So, I let Install4Free handle it. It was a big mistake thinking upgrading would only take the mythical few minutes.
Psshheww! I've restored the thing to a semblance of its former simplicity, but inform me if it's buggy or altered! I have to play with the new WP later!
Now, plenty of coursework to do! Hiatus alert!
Original: For the second time, I tried to upgrade from WP 2.3.3 to 2.5. For the second time, I was assaulted by niggling errors that wasted my time. I apologize for the downtime! I'm going to keep the plugins inactivated for now, and try again later.

Every time I work with code, I have to resist the temptation to lose my temper. I've dealt with code for years, ever since I did SIGINT with the US Army. Sometimes, it's a punctuation mark I omit, or something just as niggling. I might have got fixated on a few mistakes and made my task harder.
But, installing instead of upgrading, and then swapping directory names, is another good idea.
After the fact, I'm proud it's all mine!

I generally agree with you about liking to have control, and I usually make the trade-off of occasional headaches to get this. But there comes a point where laziness rules the day, and a blogging platform is one of those points.
As Steve Yegge pointed out on his blog, the thing about Blogger is that it's just barely good enough, which means that one is frustrated in two ways: at the little things that one would like to control, but can't, and the realization that a lot of work will be involved if such control is desired.
For me, there are only a couple of things I can think of off the top of my head that I can't do that bother me. I'd like to have a CAPTCHA which I supply -- one that is easier for humans to read. I'd also like to add pages that live under the same domain, without having to create them as posts, instead of pointing away from my blog to my own site.
I guess we all pick our projects, though.

In the heady days of 2000, I ran my own website written straight from simple HTML code. I also switch out most of my Microsoft programs for open source as much as I can handle. So, I grumble, but I do prefer controlling my destiny. In hindsight, my problem could have been very simple. And, installing is simpler than upgrading. Also, it was the confluence of ISP problems (which I take more seriously) and the demands of my coursework that helped to create this traffic jam.

Every time I think about leaving Blogger and hosting my blog on my own site, stories like yours completely dissuade me. The little bit of extra control that I'd gain never seems worth it, compared to the administrative overhead.
What's your argument against Blogger? If it's simply that you like tinkering, that's completely understandable -- I feel this way in other areas.
Sorry to hear about your hassles, though, and best wishes for smooth sailing from now on.
