Out of Pocket, Out of Mind

Stalling TimeI'm actually glad .

Obama's phenomenal fundraising success…He's now raised well over a quarter of a billion dollars, forever changing the way presidential candidates will approach the task of funding their campaign.

Billion? What the…??? And, who in their right mind would be pleased with this perversely egalitarian form of lobbying? If some corporation lobbies a committee for a subsidy, there's a big payoff. If tens of millions of schmucks give a few sawbucks to a possible president, what do they get (if they get anything)? Why not just go to Las Vegas for the ridiculous kitsch and faux family-oriented…er, casinos??

Now, Bal(t)imoron, you just can't understand the need to watch late night TV (and, since I download, I don't bend over for commercials either), and hear the punch lines bashing a truly worthy buffoon?

Oh, now it's worth it!

@Brendan:

I would agree that Obama is making the best out of a bad system.

I don't think that you're a schmuck if you make a contribution to something you believe in. Intangibles can be worth a lot. John Cole used to talk about making another small-dollar contribution every time Hillary said something obnoxious, which helped him get over his mad. Seems way healthier than going to Vegas, to me anyway.

And in any case, cutting the fat cats out of the loop is a big step in the right direction for restoring democracy. I think it's crazy to spend a billion dollars for a presidential campaign, but as long as that's the reality, I'm much happier that it's coming from millions of people. Essentially, it's a publicly financed campaign, which is what it would be in an ideal world.
