Are FTA and Alliance Shibboleths in Seoul?
Daniel W. Drezner and Henry Farrell have a great discussion about Ireland's dismissal of the Lisbon Treaty. But, I was struck by similarities between Irish scorn, particularly the «crazies», and South Korean animosity towards American beef, FTA, and, increasingly, the ROK-US alliance. Notwithstanding expat conservatives' Brechtian contempt for «the People», neither pro-market conservatives or pro-civil society progressives really know how to debate the technical concepts involved with these fundamental issues. Elites, and in this case, the incompetents in the Bush and Lee administrations, have managed to turn technical issues, like OIE standards, into the stuff of street protest and the butt of unscientific lampooning on ROK TV.
