Pyongyang-ology, Good and Bad
Two good pieces of Pyongyang-ological import involve a possible succession struggle if Kim Jong-il dies and scenarios about the future of the nation. The latter conjectures don't really involve factual evidence inside DPRK. And then, there's just the fluff about Kim Jong-il that gets trotted out every time DPRK does anything provocative, which I won't even honor with links.
But, when dealing with the former sort of questions involving factual assertions, and with an eye towards how the East German Stasi infiltrated the intelligence agencies of the former Federal Republic of Germany, I have to ask why more is not known Pyongyang-ologically. The bulk of the intelligence in the past few days has come from the ROK National Intelligence Service (NIS). So, are the North Koreans, like the Stasi, actively stymieing South Korean intelligence-gathering efforts by infiltrating it? Or, is the NIS just incompetent?
At any rate, I should read a few books languishing on my reading list about DPRK and Kim Jong-il before he does die.
