A Republican and A Democrat Talk Economic Sense
I identify with Robert Litan's plight as a pro-trade liberalization Democrat. His call for wage insurance and health care reform, instead of demonizing freer trade, makes public policy sense. But, later, as both men unravel the American political economy of farm subsidies and Democratic support for poison pills, like labor environmental standards in bilateral FTAs, my skepticism about reform increases.
Another relief is to hear two men from different parties agree that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac don't need more regulation, just better enabling legislation. Ooooops...that's not the Democratic party line! At this point, I just offer this golden bhTV oldie: own-to-rent reform.
Ditto on managed trade deals. Litan's horror story about the dismantling of the multilateral trade system is a bloody screamer.
Lindsay's take on wage inequality between college and high school grads not as an economic problem but as a social and educational problem is also refreshing. It's sweet to hear a Democrat call the American educational system, «Soviet».
This diavlog provides a firm basis for discussion between citizens when the election season ends and there's a chance again for families and communities to address real problems, not compete with the national political parties for stupidity.
