Does the UN Abet Burmese Generals?
Here's another plaint/query from Matthew Lee: is the UN wasting its time in Myanmar? Lee raises the point, that the UN's special envoy, Ibrahim Gambari, probably due to his own political ambitions in his own Nigeria, justifies his trips to mediate between Than Shwe and Aung San Suu Kyi as a way to get a deal on Suu Kyi's release or another round of elections. Backed by Moscow and Beijing, the UN legitimates the junta.
Would Beijing fight so hard for one of its oil clients' «right» to a visit?
