Flexing ROKN Muscle
At a time when ROK-US is rarely followed by anything but angry epithets, Mingi Hyun reports on the ROK Navy's capital expansion and steps toward joint operations and training with the US Navy. But Hyun's conclusion is inspiring:
Equally important, such operations will also instill a new breed of purpose behind the US-ROK alliance amongst the South Korean public. The alliance may have been forged in blood and gratitude. However, national interest will become the undisputed dominant undercurrent driving the alliance over the next few decades, which should serve as a trust-worthy guarantor for the health of the alliance considering the political circles in both Washington and Seoul are dominated by those of the post-Korean War generation.
Of course, I'm a Mahan fan, so naval cooperation seems a no-brainer that complements ROK's value as a democratizing agent on the Eurasian landmass (i.e., PRC). And, strengthening the ROK-US alliance is twice the reward.
